Question: Difference between red mark and scar left by spots/acne?

what is the difference between a scar and a red mark left by spots/acne before. i went to a skin clinic and they told me that scars dont go away but red marks gradually fade but it takes time....can someone tell me what is a scar...and a red mark....as such.....
