Ive been given Tetralysal 300 by my doctor. I have been on this now a month and a half and it hasn't done anything, I was on Erythromycin (500mg twice a day) before which took 3 weeks to start to clear my acne...how long does Tetralysal take to work? (Lymecycline, 408mg once a day)

Lymecycline is generally one of the better antibiotics, erythromycin does work but you tend to need doses of 500mgs twice daily to get good effect. This is generally poorly tolerated unless one of the more expensive preparations such as erythromycin succinate is used. The only other oral antibiotic worth using is minocycline, I have sometimes seen doses of 200mgs a day used, though there is an increased risk of side effects. All acne antibiotics should be continued for about 6 to 8 weeks before assessment, so you have given the drug a reasonable trial already. Once you have exhausted this group the only other option is Roaccutane, which does have significant risks and is only prescribable in the UK by specialist dermatologists.
